What is SAY?

SAY Something is an outdoor mural competition, that aims to give young people a visual platform to reflect on social justice issues affecting them and the community.
There are 8 rounds of the competition, beginning in October 2023 and finishing in 2025.
Each round, one young artist’s submission is selected by the community to be painted on our mural wall. Our artists get to connect with experienced muralist mentors and exhibit their murals and other portfolios of work to community and council members, friends and family.
Each of our artists have chosen or responded to social justice topics that are present and impacting our communities, ranging from mental health to women’s empowerment, celebrating NAIDOC and many more.
We invite you to look closely at the art made and reflect on the topics they highlight.

Katerina Vlattas
Kat developed her passion for art through the influence of her mother, who created artwork in front of her throughout her childhood. This early exposure nurtured Kat’s creativity and helped shape her artistic identity.
With her mural Keep The Ocean Blue, Kat was eager to use her art to draw attention to an issue close to her heart. Inspired by the pollution she noticed in her daily life—from streets to waterways—Kat wanted to highlight the often-overlooked impact that human waste has on marine creatures we rarely see.
Her design, featuring large fish surrounded by painted trash, encourages viewers to reflect on their role in protecting the environment. Through this work, Kat hopes to inspire greater awareness and action towards preserving our oceans for the future.
