19 Mar 3Points Connect – What Is The Cost Of Ticking The Box?
‘What is the cost of ticking the box to the mental health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?’
This was the wicked question posed for the latest 3 Points Connect held on Friday 9th March at Holman Webb Lawyers in Angel Place, Sydney.
The presenters, Justin Noel of Original Consultants, Dianne Brookes Disability Advocate and Ken Zulumovski CEO of GUIR, showed many examples of ticking the box and the effects it has on the community. Some actions that lead to tragedy and the ongoing perpetuation of trans-generational trauma in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
It sparked a lively conversation amongst participants from across the Government and NGO sectors and Local Elder community representatives from South East Sydney. All agreed that more deliberate consideration needed to be taken before ticking the box and also that more importance needed to be placed in involving grass root community members in decision-making processes. Meaningful partnerships need to be created at this grassroots level.
It is because of this that a follow-up meeting will be held on 20th April on the traditional lands of the Bidjigal people. More information will follow about this day.
